New York: In a major development, Donald Trump‘s Gaza peace plan has now received the support of the United Nations Security Council. The Security Council on Monday voted in favour of Donald Trump‘s Gaza peace plan, which includes the deployment of international forces. 13 countries—including the UK, France, and Somalia- supported the proposal in the UNSC vote while Russia and China abstained from voting.
It is important to note that President Trump has proposed a 20-point framework regarding Gaza. Major international roadmap for implementing a ceasefire, rebuilding the Strip, and establishing governance are some of the few points. Hamas, which governs Gaza, has rejected the UN resolution.
The Security Council text incorporates Trump’s blueprint. It has invited the UN member states to join the proposed Board of Peace. Notably, the interim body will oversee Gaza’s reconstruction and guide its economic stability. After the vote, Mike Waltz, the US Ambassador to the United Nations, said that today’s resolution is another important step that will make Gaza prosperous and create an environment in which Israel can remain secure.
Here are some of the key details
- Last month, as the first phase of Trump’s plan progressed, Israel and Hamas halted their two-year-long conflict
- Both the countries approved a hostage-release agreement, which is considered essential for the deal.
- After Monday’s vote at the UNSC, Trump’s blueprint for Gaza has effectively become a mandate.
- The peace plan calls for the creation of an International Stabilization Force (ISF)
- ISF will work with Israel, Egypt, and newly trained Palestinian police to secure the border areas
- The force will also help demilitarize the Gaza Strip.
- It also approves the formation of a transitional governing body for Gaza called the Board of Peace, whose chairman would, in principle, be Trump.
- The proposal also mentions the possibility of a future Palestinian state.
