‘One National Guard member dies, another…’: President Donald Trump shares major update on DC shooting incident

US President Donald Trump has confirmed that one of two National Guard members shot on Wednesday in Washington, DC, has died. Twenty-year-old Sarah Beckstrom succumbed to her injuries, President Trump said on Thursday evening. According to a BBC report, the other injured member, twenty-four-year-old Andrew Wolfe, is “fighting for his life.”

Was the accused identified?

The shooting occurred at close range in central Washington, prompting a swift reaction from the administration. Authorities identified the accused as Rahmanullah Lakanwal, a 29-year-old Afghan national who arrived in 2021.

What did President Donald Trump say about the incident?

During a Thanksgiving call with military personnel, President Trump confirmed the passing of Sarah Beckstrom. “Sarah Beckstrom of West Virginia, one of the guardsmen that we’re talking about, highly respected, young, magnificent person … She’s just passed away. She’s no longer with us,” he was quoted as saying by the BBC.

When did the incident take place?

The shooting, which occurred near a busy metro station at peak weekday hours, has renewed scrutiny of Trump’s deployment of military forces in several Democrat led cities, including Washington, Los Angeles and Memphis, a strategy that has attracted lawsuits and criticism from local leaders.

Ms Beckstrom joined the West Virginia Army National Guard on 26 June 2023 and was allocated to the 863rd Military Police Company, 111th Engineer Brigade. Following Trump’s confirmation of Sara Beckstrom’s death, several officials from his administration expressed their condolences. FBI Director Kash Patel stated that Sara Beckstrom was a young soldier and a patriot.

Following the incident, United States President Donald Trump wrote on Truth Social, “The animal that shot the two National Guardsmen, with both being critically wounded, and now in two separate hospitals, is also severely wounded, but regardless, will pay a very steep price. God bless our Great National Guard, and all of our Military and Law Enforcement. These are truly Great People. I, as President of the United States, and everyone associated with the Office of the Presidency, am with you!”

Jim Justice, United States Senator from the State of West Virginia, expressed his devastation upon learning about the death of Ms. Beckstrom. He states that he was “absolutely devastated” “Our prayers are with her family, friends, and fellow guardsmen during an incredibly difficult Thanksgiving Day,” Senator Justice noted in a statement regarding Ms. Beckstrom’s passing. “We are also lifting up Andrew Wolfe in prayer as he continues his journey to recovery.”
