The military presence of the United States around Venezuela in South America has grown. On Tuesday, the largest aircraft carrier in the world, the USS Gerald R. Ford, arrived in Latin America.
The U.S. Southern Command, which oversees Latin America and the Caribbean region, stated in a release that the USS Gerald R. Ford is now part of their area of operations. The deployment of the vessel was ordered three weeks earlier to help combat drug trafficking in the area.
In the meantime, Venezuela has threatened that this could provoke a wider conflict and claimed it was also making military deployments.
According to Pentagon spokesperson Sean Parnell, this deployment of the aircraft carrier would improve U.S. capabilities to detect, monitor and stop illegal elements and activities that pose a threat to the security and prosperity of the U.S. homeland and to our security in the Western Hemisphere.
According to the Time Magazine report, the carrier joins eight warships, a nuclear submarine, and F-35 jets, as well as approximately 10,000 U.S. personnel that have been deployed to the region in the preceding months, who have engaged in what the Trump Administration refers to as a “non-international armed conflict” against “narcoterrorists,” which, according to the Trump Administration, are supported by the Venezuelan government.
President Donald Trump is launching a military campaign in the Caribbean and the eastern Pacific and is sending in naval and air assets to combat drug trafficking.
Venezuela is concerned that the military deployment is part of a covert U.S. plan to orchestrate a coup in the country. Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro accused the Trump administration of conspiring for war, while the Trump administration has pointedly rejected Maduro’s presidency, claiming that his election was fraudulent.
However, on November 2, Trump minimized the chances of a war with Venezuela but said Maduro’s days are numbered. As per reports from the U.S. government since the beginning of September, the U.S. military has attacked at least 20 possible ships in international waters in that time period, resulting in at least 76 deaths.
The Trump administration informed Congress in a notice that the U.S. is in armed conflict with drug cartels.
