US President Donald Trump announced that he will visit China in April after receiving an invitation from Chinese President Xi Jinping. He revealed the plan in a post on social media, shortly after saying he had a “very good” phone call with Xi earlier in the day. In his Truth Social post on Monday, Trump said that during the call they talked about Ukraine, Russia, fentanyl issues, soybeans and other farm goods. He added that the two countries had reached an important agreement that would help American farmers and that the deal would continue to improve.
He said the discussion came after their “very successful” meeting in South Korea three weeks ago, and noted that both leaders had made “strong progress” in keeping their recent agreements updated and on track. Trump also shared that he plans to invite Xi for a state visit to the United States sometime next year.
China’s Xinhua news agency confirmed the phone conversation and reported that Xi used the call to restate China’s firm position on Taiwan, saying that Taiwan’s return to China is a key part of the international order created after World War II.
According to the report, Xi also reminded Trump that China and the United States once fought together against fascism and militarism, and said both nations should work to protect the outcomes of that wartime victory.
China is currently caught in a growing diplomatic dispute with Japan after Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi made remarks about the Taiwan Strait.
The statement also said that Xi and Trump talked about the war in Ukraine during their phone call. Xi repeated that China supports “any effort that helps bring peace” and said he hoped the countries involved would reduce their disagreements and work toward a “fair, lasting and firm peace deal.”
A senior official from the Trump administration confirmed the call but did not say who requested it. However, The Wall Street Journal reported that China was the one that set up the conversation.
This phone call took place only a few weeks after Trump and Xi met in Busan on October 30 — their first face-to-face meeting since 2019. During that meeting, both countries agreed to pause tariffs and export controls for one year.
Officials on both sides said the meeting helped calm relations after a period of increased tension.
