New Delhi: After the country’s decade-long ban on alcohol, Saudi Arabia has taken a major decision that has now become a global talking point. As per the reports, the Saudi government has expanded access to its only alcohol-selling store for certain individuals. After this change, non-Muslim foreign nationals holding a Premium Residency Permit can now purchase alcohol from this store. It is important to note that there has been no official announcement of this decision. However, long queues of cars and people have been seen outside the unmarked store located in Riyadh’s Diplomatic Quarter.
As per the reports, from the outside, the shop looks completely ordinary and has no name or identification. Interestingly, it is said to have opened in January 2024, and earlier only non-Muslim diplomats were allowed to buy alcohol there. Now, however, non-Muslim foreign nationals with Premium Residency status can also purchase alcohol from this store.
Here are some of the important details:
- The Premium Residency Permit is part of a special Saudi policy aimed at attracting investors, entrepreneurs
- The main requirements for this permit include high income and significant investment.
- Under this scheme, foreigners can buy property without a Saudi sponsor, start businesses, and live with their families in the country.
- According to the Associated Press and other reports, customers exiting the store said prices are quite high.
- Diplomats receive tax exemptions on their purchases, but Premium Residency holders do not.
- Customers described the store as well stocked, although some said the selection of beer and wine is still limited.
Owing to the strict ban on alcohol, residents of Saudi Arabia often used to travel to neighboring Bahrain, where alcohol is legal for both Muslims and non-Muslims. On weekends and holidays, large numbers of people from Saudi Arabia and other Gulf countries visit Bahrain, making it a popular tourist destination.
