A Hindu man was beaten to death by a group of people in Bangladesh’s Rajbari district on Wednesday night, according to local media reports. The man, named Amrit Mondal, was allegedly attacked over claims that he was trying to collect extortion money. It is not yet clear whether he was targeted because of his religion. The incident happened just a week after another Hindu man, Dipu Chandra Das, was lynched and burned alive in Mymensingh’s Bhaluka area. That killing followed unrest after the death of Osman Hadi, a well-known student leader whose protest movement led to the removal of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
According to The Daily Star, police officer Debrata Sarkar, who serves as Assistant Superintendent of Police for the Pangsha Circle, said the attack on Mondal took place around 11 pm in Hosendanga village. Police later arrested one of Mondal’s alleged associates, Mohammad Selim, and recovered two guns from him, including a pistol.
Amrit Mondal, also known locally as Samrat, had several criminal cases against him, including a murder case. Local villagers told reporters that he was part of a gang and had gone into hiding in India after Sheikh Hasina was removed from power in 2024. They said he had recently returned to the village.
Residents also claimed that Mondal and his companions went to the house of a man named Shahidul Islam on Thursday night to demand money. When someone raised an alarm, villagers gathered at the spot and attacked Mondal. Police later took him to the hospital in a critical condition, where doctors declared him dead.

The Bangladesh interim government has said that the killing of Amrit Mondal was not a communal attack. In a statement issued on Thursday night, the government said police investigations so far show that the violence was linked to extortion and criminal activity, not religion.
The statement said Amrit Mondal, also known as Samrat, was a wanted criminal who came to the area to collect extortion money. During a clash with angry local residents, he was beaten and later died.
According to the government, Mondal was named in several serious criminal cases, including murder and extortion, which were filed in 2023. He also had active arrest warrants against him at the time of the incident.
The government added that strict legal action will be taken against everyone involved in the violence, whether directly or indirectly.
The incident happened soon after violence broke out in Dhaka and other parts of Bangladesh following the death of Osman Hadi. Hadi was a well-known leader of the anti-Hasina protest movement and was planning to run as an independent candidate in the upcoming general election.
