Several people were killed and others injured after a powerful explosion tore through a bar in the upscale Alpine ski resort town of Crans-Montana. “There has been an explosion of unknown origin,” Gaetan Lathion, a police spokesman in Wallis canton in southwestern Switzerland told news agency AFP.
According to the NDTV report, the blast occurred at approximately 1:30 am (0030 GMT) in Le Constellation, a bar frequented by tourists, as partygoers celebrated the arrival of the new year. “The intervention is still ongoing,” he added.
Unconfirmed footage and photos shared on social media appeared to show a fire raging at a bar hosting New Year’s Eve celebrations. According to a report from Swiss news website Blick, there is speculation that the fire could be linked to firework activity at the concert; however, authorities have stated that the official cause remains unknown.
