According to officials, as reported by AP, the incident took place outside the ballroom where Trump was seated along with the other attendees. Many ​of ⁠the 2,600 attendees took cover while waiters fled to the front of the ⁠dining ​hall.

The security incident occurred at approximately 8:45 PM EDT as dinner service was underway. Witnesses reported hearing “loud, rhythmic sounds” echoing from the lobby area, which were quickly identified as gunfire. According to AL Jazeera, the evacuation took place shortly after 8:30 PM, local time, after loud sounds were reported from the lobby area. There have been no confirmed reports of injuries to the President or other top government officials in attendance.

The FBI has stated that the shooter is in custody. As per the AP report, President Donald Trump was uninjured. Following the incident, Jeanine Pirro shared a brief video from the hotel Stating,”I have been taken out of the ballroom after the sound of the shots fired. The Secret Service is now in charge of this building, this hotel. I just spoke to Mayor Muriel Bowser. She is on her way, and (Police) Chief Jeffery Carroll is on his way. He will be in charge as soon as he gets here.”
