Imran Khan Big Update: In the latest development, imprisoned former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan was shifted back to Adiala Prison on Friday after spending a few hours at a private hospital in Islamabad. He was shifted to the hospital for a brief medical examination, his party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) said. Police took Khan to Shifa International Hospital following a Supreme Court order for a brief medical examination, including for an eye condition.
Notably, the former Pak PM was ousted from power four years ago in 2022 and has remained in prison for more than three years. Khan was supposed to remain in the hospital till his next hearing, which is scheduled till September 16. PTI earlier hailed the country’s top court’s verdict to transfer Khan to a hospital, “Imran Khan’s arrival at the hospital for treatment is not our destination, but merely a milestone. Our true freedom is the real destination, and an independent judiciary is indispensable for achieving it.”
Khan is serving a 14-year sentence linked to the Toshakhana case at Rawalpindi’s Adiala Jail.
Earlier, the court also allowed weekly meetings with family
The Supreme Court issued directives for a brief health evaluation of Khan following growing concerns over his medical condition in jail, Dawn reported. The court further instructed authorities to ensure his weekly meetings with his family members, highlighting the isolation imposed on political prisoners in Pakistan.
On Tuesday, Imran Khan reportedly met his wife Bushra Bibi and sister Noreen Niazi at Adiala Jail. This was their first meeting this year, after a gap of about nine months.
It is to be noted that the PTI chief met his sister for about a 15-minute meeting and his meeting with his wife lasted for 30-35 minutes.
Khan was removed from PM’s post following a fallout with the Pak military. PTI leaders and Khan were barred from participating in the 2024 general elections.
In 2025, Khan was sentenced to 14 years in jail in connection with a land corruption case. Prosecutors stated that Khan and his wife received land as a bribe through the Al-Qadir Trust. In 2024, a court convicted him for making public a classified cable sent to Islamabad by Pak’s ambassador in Washington in 2022.
However, Khan and his party continue to get massive support from the young voters of the country.
PTI spokesperson Zulfikar Bukhari dismissed concerns that Khan’s release would increase political tensions.
“If Imran Khan was released tomorrow, hypothetically, he wouldn’t do anything that would effectively damage the country,” Bukhari said.
