Sikh delivery worker shot dead while delivering pizza in New York; Punjabi organisation seeks justice

A 28-year-old Indian immigrant was fatally shot by an unidentified assailant while delivering pizza in Brooklyn, New York City. Gurdeep Singh, who hailed from Jabowal village in Kapurthala district, Punjab, has been identified as the victim. His family said he travelled to the US in 2017 through the “dunki route”, referring to an irregular route used by migrants to reach Western countries.

He had been working as a delivery partner in New York while staying in the US on a work permit. His family said he had not visited home for nearly nine years. Police suspect the shooting may have taken place during an attempted robbery. However, the exact sequence of events and the motive behind the attack remain unclear. Further details are expected as the investigation progresses.

According to Singh’s father, Pyara Lal, his son had borrowed heavily to fund his journey to the US and faced several hardships after reaching the country. He continued working long hours, hoping to provide a better life for his family, NDTV reported.

NAPA seeks stronger action

The North American Punjabi Association (NAPA) on Sunday expressed grief and concern over the killing of 28-year-old Gurdeep Singh, a Sikh immigrant from Punjab’s Kapurthala district, in New York City.

NAPA executive director Satnam Singh Chahal said the incident should not be treated as an isolated case. “Every time a young Punjabi or Sikh person is killed, a family is destroyed. We cannot allow repeated violence to become something the community simply learns to live with,” Chahal said.

NAPA urged the investigators to establish the exact motive behind the killing and cautioned against drawing conclusions before the probe is over. It said the incident reflected wider concerns of threats, extortion and violence faced by members of the Punjabi and Sikh diaspora in the US.

NAPA referred to reported extortion cases in California and a federal crackdown launched in July against transnational organised crime. It called for better coordination between federal, state and local law enforcement agencies to tackle criminal networks operating across state and international borders.

“The Sikh and Punjabi diaspora deserves the protection every American deserves,” NAPA said. “Gurdeep Singh should not become just another name added to a growing list of victims. Enough is enough,” Chahal said.
