‘Strait of Hormuz is American territory’: Trump claims ‘total control’ of waterway, says Iran desperate for deal with US

US President Donald Trump has stepped up his criticism of Iran, saying the country is facing serious economic and military problems. He also claimed that the United States now has effective control over the strategically important Strait of Hormuz. “I view the Strait of Hormuz as an American territory right now,” Trump said. He separately claimed that the US had “total control” over the area around the waterway, including parts of the land nearby.

Speaking to reporters on Friday, Trump said Iran wanted to reach an agreement with the US but was unwilling to accept the terms Washington was seeking. “They would love to make a deal, but they’re not ready to make the right deal,” Trump said.

Trump also described Iran’s economic situation as extremely difficult. He claimed the country was running short of money and was struggling to pay members of its security forces.

“They have no money. They have no navy. They have no air force. They’re not paying their soldiers. They’re not paying their police. They have 350% inflation,” Trump said.

His remarks come as tensions between Washington and Tehran remain high, particularly over the Strait of Hormuz and the possibility of a broader agreement between the two countries.

Trump also repeated his warning over Iran’s nuclear programme, saying Tehran would not be allowed to develop a nuclear weapon.

“They’ll never have a nuclear weapon,” he said.

Trump has previously said that a nuclear-armed Iran could pose a threat to Israel and other countries in the region. He has maintained that the US will take steps to prevent Tehran from gaining nuclear weapons capability.

The latest comments come as the Trump administration continues to increase economic pressure on Iran. Trump has warned of wide-ranging sanctions and called the campaign an “economic D-Day”. US officials have also indicated that economic pressure remains one of Washington’s main ways of putting pressure on Tehran.
